Flax... The Forgotten Health Food

"Wherever flaxseed becomes a regular food item among the people, there will be better health." Mahatma Gandhi

Flax seeds are a valuable and much under utilized part of any healthy eating plan. Ground flax seeds provide an excellent source of protein, essential oils, vitamins, minerals and fiber. Since about 3000 BC, flax seeds have been grown, harvested and eaten by human beings. Flax's Latin name Linum usitatissimum, means "the most useful." In ancient times, flax seeds were a valuable food source because the seeds have a near infinite shelf life and stayed fresh without special care. Seeds found in the Egyptian tombs are believed to be several thousand years old and are still viable and edible today.

Here is some brief history of flax in the US. According to The Thomas Jefferson Agricultural Institute, "In addition to being a fiber source, flax was also an important oilseed in America until the mid-1900s. Despite the valuable characteristics of both linseed oil and linen fiber, flax began to fade from American farms after the development of the petroleum industry, especially following World War II."

O
ver the years, flax seeds have been used as both a food and a healing substance. When ground, flax seeds are an important seed food because they are high in soluble fiber. Soluble fiber is important for healthy digestion and elimination. Flax's high soluble fiber content also gives it a mild laxative quality and it is much safer to use than Ex-lax or other bowel stimulants. Flax also provides an excellent source of lignans. Lignans are important because they have anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial properties. They also show anti-cholesterol, anti-cancer, anti-diabetes, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-lupus benefits. Ground flax is one of the few plants that contains complete proteins. Complete proteins are those that contain all 9 essential amino acids and can sustain life.

The best way to use flax seeds and receive their maximum health benefits is to freshly grind them. Whole flax seeds are very difficult to chew and digest completely and don't provide as much nutritional value as ground meal. Once ground, the flax meal needs to be used right away because they are highly perishable. The unused portion can be placed in an ai
r tight container and stored in the freezer for up to 7 days. Eating flax meal is actually better for you in the long term that taking just the flax seed oil alone because the meal contains not only the essential oils but the additional proteins, minerals and fiber as well.

New, More Effective Strategies for Treating Asthma and Allergies

Asthma is a respiratory disease that's on the rise in this country. Sometimes caused by allergies, Asthma has symptoms including coughing, wheezing, sudden difficulty in breathing, and a tight feeling in the chest. The word asthma comes from the Greek word "azein" meaning to "breathe hard." Current thinking on the treatment of asthma and allergies is shifting. Traditional approaches have been to test the patient for allergic substances, try to remove those substances and then use a variety of steroid and non-steroidal compounds to control the asthmatic symptoms.

According to Dr. Sally E. Wenzel, a specialist in allergic and non-allergic asthma, "In recent years, clinical and scientific knowledge of asthma has evolved from a model of episodic constriction of bronchial smooth muscle to a model which involves chronic airway inflammation. Evidence of inflammation is present at the onset of symptoms in newly diagnosed asthmatic patients. By acquiring a better understanding and appreciation of the inflammatory process, physicians can employ treatments to inhibit specific steps in the process and improve control over asthma and its symptoms."

In other words, current thinking now suggests that asthmatics have higher levels of inflammation in their bodies. Their immune systems respond by over acting to stimulus due to that inflammation. This over response creates the symptoms we call asthma. In a healthy person, the same stimulus would not create the same symptom pattern. Interestingly, other diseases such as arthritis, food and environmental allergies, MS, diabetes and heart disease show this same excess inflammation pattern.

If you or a family member is exhibiting asthmatic or allergic symptoms, here are some important basics to check before using medication. If the asthma is severe, you may need to try these in conjunction with your medications.
  • Do they drink enough water? Water keeps the kidneys, digestive and immune systems working properly so toxins do not build up in the blood stream. To determine daily water intake, take your body weight and divide it by 2. This equals the number of ounces of water to drink every day.
  • Do they get enough fruits and vegetables in their diet? Fruits and vegetables not only provide essential vitamins and minerals but provide antioxidants that reduce inflammation levels in the body. High protein, sugar, artificial ingredients, trans fats and artificial additives all increase total body inflammation.
  • Is their vitamin and mineral supplement strong enough to balance the body and maintain a low total body inflammation? In sufficient quantities, Vitamin A, C, D, B and E along with CoQ10 are all strong antioxidants and reduce inflammation in the body.
  • Do they get enough essential fatty acids (Omega-3) in their diet? Omega-3 fatty acids provide an important role in keeping all the cells healthy and providing a strong ant-inflammatory affect.
  • How many over the counter and prescription medications do they take? Over the counter and prescription medications increase total body inflammation.
  • Are your children's stress levels well managed? High stress living is probably the single, greatest contributor to total body inflammation. Unmanaged stress can lead to poor health and thoughts of anxiety and despair.
