Ultraman Triathlon Kona, Hawaii
Goals Are Important
Attainable goals are essential in maintaining a lifetime of fitness and good health. Needless to say Philip Nickles' goal of competing in the 2005 Ultraman Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii was what we call a "way over the top" kind of goal. But hey, that's Philip. Philip, an attorney, accepted the challenge and successfully completed the event. His 3 day, 320 mile feat of human endurance makes me proud to have been a part of his training and support team. Special thanks goes out to the other members of his support team; my wife Nancy, his wife Laura and three kids Sophia, Clara and Ethan. Please join as we re-live the Hawaii Ultraman Triathlon experience from training preparation to the day by day account of all the action.
Preparation Phase
Philip first approached me in 2004 about preparing for competition in the November 2005 Hawaii Ultraman Triathlon. He wanted to know if there was anything I could do to help him successfully complete the event. I told him that functional training would build muscular strength, improve balance, increase flexibility and stamina. Because the event is 320 miles in three days, his muscular and core strength training would be crucial for improving performance, preventing injury and speeding recovery after each day's activities. We talked about nutrition as being the cornerstone of his entire training program. Good nutrition would provide the necessary fuel for efficient muscle function and repair before and during event competition. We decided to follow a twice weekly training schedule and a modified Zone eating program. Our training actually began in July of 2004. At that time, I could never have imagined what the event would really be like.
