All the Way to MS Rest Stop 1
The next leg of our journey was the most challenging. Phyliss had a nice big hill to navigate which is difficult even for someone at full capacity. But, she walked right down and then slowly, tenaciously, right back up the other side. We had a brief rest at the the top of the hill for a few bites of energy bar and small talk with her new found, motorcycle buddies and then we were back on schedule.
We reached MS Rest Stop 1 at about the 3 hours and 12 minute mark. The Rest Stop volunteers were excited to see Phyliss. They had hear about Phyliss, someone with long standing MS, who was walking for a cure. Our crew gassed up with water and bananas and then we were off. The volunteers gave her a big cheer and we were off in the third leg of our journey.
Phyliss has been living with MS for over 26 years and according to The National MS Society, maybe the longest diagnosed case on record. Phyliss said this walk was important for her and for others with MS. "Before I embarked upon this personal challenge I was shrinking my world. Now I know it's possible to walk to the store, a restaurant or anywhere. Finishing this walk has certainly been empowering for me; I hope it will be for others."
Phyllis describes her journey over the last 6 months like this; "I needed the strength, encouragement and hope to go on. Now with that support, I can start to live my life again and put MS in its proper place. MS is not my life, it is only a small part. As I become mentally and physically stronger, I intend to make MS an ever smaller and smaller part as time goes on."
